Alexis was 19 when she was thrown out of her home for being transgender. She began to sofa-surf, seeking short refuge at the homes of friends and even began to use dating apps to find somewhere to stay. During this period, she was subjected to transphobic abuse, harassment and sexual assault. She was eventually moved into temporary accommodation, where her vulnerability drastically worsened.

Alexis’s needs, aspirations and self-esteem began to fall away. As well as her housing insecurity, Alexis experienced difficulty accessing gender affirmative healthcare and funding for her studies.

It was a hellish time. No one tried to help me. There were people who used to come into my dorm and write on my dorm and throw eggs, telling me to come outside, wanting to fight me. Once in the laundry room, someone tried to drag me into his room and tried to sexually abuse me.

At this point, a referral was made to LandAid’s charity partner, Greater Change. They supported Alexis with personalised budgets for up to £600 that covered travel to college, support services and much needed new clothing.

LandAid funding has helped Alexis to regain stability, meaning that she can continue with her education and access safe support. She has been able to reaffirm her female identity and walk a little taller in the world.

Funding from the property industry has not only provided Alexis with vital essentials, but has also given her access to important services, enabling her to be her true self.
