Join us for Get Online Week 2024

A digital inclusion campaign running from 14- 20 October by the Good Things Foundation to provide young people with the means to use the internet, and the skills to use it safely.

We’ve partnered with Vodafone to distribute 50,000 SIM cards for the homelessness sector, as well as the Good Things Foundation’s National Device Bank, to give charities access to digital equipment including mobile phones.

Why is Get Online Week needed?

It’s estimated that there are 2.7 million people who cannot afford a mobile phone contract and 3.7 million aren’t equipped with the correct connectivity. These people become locked out of society and often experience loneliness, social and financial exclusion. Digital skills are crucial for independent living, autonomy, and empowerment in today’s society.

Young people facing homelessness face challenges getting online due to…

  • No settled home address to have a laptop and maintain internet connection
  • Lack of, or inadequate access to devices that can access the internet
  • Lack of digital literacy and the skills to stay online safely

LandAid’s distributing 50,000 FREE Vodafone SIMs

We want to close the digital divide for young people experiencing homelessness. Together with Vodafone we are providing 50,000 free SIM cards to ensure young people are not overlooked in this space.

The value of this initiative will represent £13.5 million which will have the potential to support the thousands of young people at risk of homelessness by keeping them digitally connected.

Each SIM card is loaded with 40GB of data a month for 6 months, plus unlimited calls and texts.

If you are a charity that could benefit from these free SIM cards, please apply.

Good Things Foundation National Device Bank

To support our SIMs programme, the Good Things Foundation run a National Device Bank that provides refurbished digital equipment, including mobile phones and tablets to individuals who may not have access to a device.

The National Device Bank was originally created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, when the internet became a lifeline to stay connected with work, support services and loved ones. They work alongside the National Digital Inclusion Network  to distribute devices to those who don’t have access to their own.

The devices have been generously donated from public and private sector organisations, who contribute their end-of-life tech for reuse instead of disposal.

#ConnectIn5

We’re taking part in the #ConnectIn5 challenge to highlight the limits we might face as a charity without being online.

Here are five things we at LandAid wouldn’t be able to do without the internet.

  1. Enable our charity partners to access the hugely impactful grants and pro bono programmes that support the important work they do to end youth homelessness
  2. Connect with our supporters across the property sector. Our partnerships team works hard to facilitate positive working relationships with our partners. Together they raise funds and offer property expertise to help us in our mission.
  3. Share our impact. We use social media channels, email and our website to promote our work with the property industry. Here, we share peoples stories of the people we have heped.
  4. Host fantastic fundraising events. Our events team pull together some cracking challenges across the nations. The LandAid SleepOut, 10k, and the LandAid Trek would not be possible without signing up online.
  5. Work to End Youth Homelessness by 2029. We are a remote organisation with staff based all across the UK. The only way can connect with one another is through the internet via teams, emails and calls.

Almost everything we do is now online

Imagine if you were a young person experiencing homelessness. The #ConnectIn5 list might look a little different. You would likely need to a device and connectivity to find a job, maintain your finances, keep in touch with loved ones, learn new skills or even find a home.

The power of online is an incredible tool in ending youth homelessness.

This Get Online week we are proud to offer free SIM cards in partnership with Vodafone and also promote the Good Things Foundation National Device Bank.
