In conversation with: Sophie Jarzebowski, Regional Board Member in the South West

We sat down with Sophie, Associate Architect at Stride Treglown in Bristol to discuss her work in the education sector, homelessness in Bristol and the upcoming South West Spring Party.

Tell us a bit about the field you work in and your career in the property/built environment industry to date
I have over 14 years of experience in the construction industry and more than 6 years as an architect in the education sector, where I now lead a team of education design experts at Stride Treglown, one of the UK’s leading architectural practices.
We as a team design, manage, coordinate, and deliver primary and secondary school projects, using critical thinking and attention to detail to provide quality and conscientious work within the fast paced and highly regulated education sector. I am passionate about holistic living and equity in design, and I strive to create beautiful and functional spaces for students and staff.
You’ve been a LandAid Board Member since 2022. What motivated you to join?
I’ve lived in Bristol for 18 years and have seen homelessness rise as the economic climate becomes more challenging. It has never sat right with me that there is anyone living unsupported without shelter, especially young people. I want to do my bit to help where I can.

The South West Spring Party is coming up soon on 25 April. What are you most looking forward to about the event?

I’m really looking forward to experiencing our brilliant LandAid SW party vibes in the unique and wacky Wake the Tiger venue. It’s going to be completely different to any other event and certainly a party to remember!

We’re curious… (given your discipline) do you have a favourite building in Bristol that is or has been an inspiration for you?

As an architect in Bristol there are too many to choose from! But if I must choose – Bristol Old Vic was beautifully refurbished in 2018 and is a great example of modern architecture meeting a key heritage asset whilst still being a well-functioning and serviceable building.

Whilst we’re talking about King Street – I love the Llandoger Trow pub too. What could be more Bristol than a Tudor building with a secret techno room and a rumour that it inspired Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island (honestly, look it up!).

Attention is now fully on the South West Spring Party which will see local industry professionals coming together to support frontline youth homelessness charities in the SW region.
