LandAid and StreetSmart award grants totalling over £740,000 to charities tackling youth homelessness across the UK

The grants will support over 40 charities and over 1,000 young people in London and hundreds more across the UK on their journey out of homelessness towards a brighter and more stable future.

The StreetSmart campaign, taking place throughout November and December sees £1 added to each diner’s bill at hundreds of restaurants across the country.

For the last five years LandAid have partnered with StreetSmart to work together on the annual campaign and to direct more funding specifically towards young people experiencing homelessness between the ages of 16-25.

The 2023 campaign was the most successful year to date, with LandAid receiving over £740,000 to invest in projects supporting young people experiencing homelessness, across the UK. 

The funding has now been gathered and will be distributed to over 40 charities, supporting over 1,000 young people in London and hundreds more across the country throughout their homelessness journey. From emergency accommodation, to gaining the skills and stability to live independently, to vital equipment, tools and staffing.

The 2024 campaign will launch on Friday 1 November with hundreds of restaurants signed up, ready to take part and create change in communities across the country. 

In line with World Homelessness Day, we take a look at where the funding from last year’s campaign is being distributed and the impact that it will make to the lives of hundreds of young people across the country.

1. 1625 Independent People, Bristol

The funding will directly contribute towards a Wellbeing Coach, enabling the charity to directly support the mental health of 25 vulnerable young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Bristol. They will support them through 1:1 Wellbeing Coaching and drop-in sessions in their hostel accommodation in the city, St George’s House.

2. Active Horizons, West Midlands

Active Horizons is a  youth-led charitable organisation set up to foster leadership, promote the voice and engagement of BME young people. This funding will offer a mixture of housing support, including, bed spaces, rent subsidies, travel costs, employability and financial literacy training, and health and mental wellbeing support.

3. akt, Manchester

akt are the the only national charity dedicated to providing support for LGBTQ+ 16-25 year olds at risk or currently experiencing homelessness. This grant will partially fund the annual cost of employing one caseworker, who provides personalised 1:1 support for young people for as long as needed and suitable for their unique circumstances.

4. Alridha Foundation, Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Westminster

This grant will support the staffing of the Youth Empowerment and Support Hub (YES Hub) which aims to prevent homelessness among young people aged 16-25 in London. The hub will offer services including 12 employability training, career counselling, mental health resilience workshops. Legal and housing advice will be provided through legal clinics with caseworkers.

5. Cardinal Hume Centre, Westminster

This funding will support the centre to provide holistic and person-centred support to young people who live at their accommodation. They offer a bespoke programme of services, to develop skills and help the young people move onto more sustainable living situations.

6. Caring in Bristol, Bristol

In July 2024, Caring in Bristol opened Bristol’s only youth shelter. A volunteer-led, non-institutional space with 4 bedrooms, providing night accommodation along with space for 1-2-1 and group sessions, and social activities. They aim to improve people’s confidence, wellbeing and skills. This grant will fund both food and the running of group activities.

7. Centrepoint, Manchester

This grant will support Centrepoint in creating affordable accommodation units across Manchester (Gorton and the Northern Quarter), for young people experiencing homelessness, alongside tailored advice to enable successful independent living.

These funds were raised directly by Selfridges, Manchester.

8. Centrepoint, London

This funding will be used to support the creation of 18 new single occupancy modular homes to provide affordable housing for young people in Lambeth. Money raised will directly fund the fixtures and fittings of 11 of these properties.

9. Changing Lives, Newcastle

Changing Lives provide anyone facing a challenging time, with the right support so that they can change their life for the better. These funds would be used to provide essential items like hygiene products, clothes, food vouchers, and stationary.

10. Change Please Foundation, Southwark

This funding will  support young people aged 16-25 experiencing homelessness in London through their barista ‘Paid Employment Training Programme’. The project empowers young people by providing stability, skills, and pathways to greater independence.

11. Clock Tower Sanctuary, Brighton

Clock Tower Sanctuary are a charity who support young people aged 16-25 years who are rough sleeping, ‘sofa surfing’ or living in temporary or  emergency housing. This funding will go towards their food budget to provide young people with breakfast and a hot meal 5 days a week at their daycentre.

12. Compass Collective, Haringey

This grant will fund bringing on additional team members, to enable the organisation to increase their casework capacity for young people with newly granted refugee status.

13. Connection Support, Oxfordshire

Connection Support provide accommodation in South Oxfordshire to young people 16-25 who have left the care system and are facing homelessness.
This funding will be allocated to help young people to move on from supported accommodation and towards independent living, such as partially or fully covering their rent or enabling them to buy basic items to set up their new home such as a bed, bedding, kitchenware and towels.

14. Coram Voice, London wide

This funding will expand Coram Voice’s Homeless Outreach service. They help young people to access the social care support they are entitled to and in turn acquire secure, long-term accommodation.

15. Fat Macy’s, London wide

This grant will fund part time Progression & Engagement (P&E) Officers, providing support for young people to build steps towards independence. The programme is structured through Progression Plans, identifying key goals to equip the young people to successfully move on from temporary accommodation.

16. Herts Young Homeless, Hertfordshire

In 2022-23, 3,040 young people presented as homeless in Hertfordshire. This is a 29% increase over the previous year. Herts Young Homeless directly support around 1,000 young people a year. This funding will support the continuation and expansion of this work to reach and support more young people, specifically their counselling service.

17. IMPAKT Housing and Support, Bedfordshire

IMPAKT Housing and Support Housing Officers teach residents a range of skills to set them up for independent living including cleaning, washing and cooking. Their large communal kitchen is in much need of a makeover to provide better group and individual cooking activities. This funding will provide more storage and cooking equipment, including items such as cupboards, draws, cooking utensils and some bright décor to improve the space.

18. Jigsaw4u, South West London

Jigsaw4u work with 16- to 24-year-olds who are in or leaving the care system. The primary aim is to prepare them for transition into safe, suitable housing and successful independent living. This grant will support in funding a full-time Tenancy Support Practitioner (TSP).

19. Julian House, Bath

Julian House is a 20-bed Emergency Access Homeless Hostel in Bath running 24/7, 365 days a year, offering a short-term solution to rough sleeping. Support Workers work with residents to find housing and support options that help them off the streets for good. They supported 7 young people aged 18-25 in 2023/24, but anticipate need among young people to continue or increase over the coming months and years. This funding will contribute towards the costs of helping young people who have nowhere else to go in the area to start rebuilding their lives.

20. Latch, Leeds

Latch is a charity that refurbishes derelict and run-down houses in the Chapeltown, Harehills and Burley areas of Leeds to support those most vulnerable facing homelessness. This grant will fund the removal, wall and floor preparation, installation of bathroom tiling, and a new kitchen.

21. Local Solutions, Liverpool

This grant will allow the delivery of a skills programme for 20 Young People across 6 weeks who are currently living in Local Solutions homeless hostel and supported lodgings. The programmes will prepare them for independent living, reducing the likelihood of failed tenancies and therefore breaking the cycle of homelessness.

22. London DJ & MC Academy, Enfield & Haringey

This funding will support in launching a Sound Shelter, a transformative 24-month program designed to empower young people experiencing homelessness in Enfield and Haringey. The shelter will deliver a comprehensive program that combines music industry training, employability skills development, and mentorship to create a pathway out of homelessness.

23. Oasis Community Housing, Newcastle

Oasis Community Housing Experts by Experience group was established in early 2023 to elevate genuine “user voice” within charity’s services. This funding will be used to build on ambitions developments from their recent OFSTED registration, specifically involving young people in their HMOs (houses of multiple occupancy) to co-produce their own service standards and to conduct service reviews of all young people’s supported housing in the Northeast.

24. Open Homes Nottingham, Nottingham

Open Homes provide emergency accommodation and tailored, holistic practical support to homeless 16-25-year-olds in key areas such as education, employment, mental health, and socialization. This funding will support the recruitment and training of staff, developing assessment tools, and building partnerships with referral agencies and stakeholders.

25. Refugees at Home, London wide 

Refugees at Home is a UK charity which connects those with a spare room in their home to refugees and people seeking asylum who are in need of somewhere to stay. This funding will fund a campaign to recruit hosts committed to supporting refugees aged 16-25.

26. Quarriers, Glasgow

This grant will continue the funding of their Progress fund. This benefits young people aged 16-25 who have been in supported housing to move on into their own tenancy. Funding will support with essential furnishings e.g., beds, tables and chairs, cots, and for those starting a new job or college course, clothes, books or other essential resources.

27. Salford Foyer, Manchester

This funding will contribute to the planned construction of six new modular homes for young parents at risk of homelessness, alongside wellbeing coaching and wider mental health support. Salford Foyer are finding that their services are continually oversubscribed and in deep need of expansion. This grant will aid in this expansion, giving young people facing homelessness in the area, a safe space for up to two years before moving onto more independent living.

28. Simon Community, Northern Ireland

This funding will partially support a 6-month programme of activities for the young people who live in the charities accommodation. The programme aims to equip young people with the essential skills and connections needed for independent living while safeguarding their health and wellbeing during this vulnerable stage in their lives.

29. St Basils, Birmingham

These funds will be spent to benefit young people who are experiencing hardship. Increasingly the charity are receiving requests for simple things such as bus passes or food. There is a clear issue with young people being able to afford basic necessities in order to function in life. These funds will enable St Basils to support young people either living in their supported facility or who are being supported within their own home to ensure that they prevent future homelessness.

30. Step by Step, Hampshire

Step by Step are currently undertaking a 1-year pilot to provide move on accommodation from higher level supported independence flats. This will further support young people age 18 to 25 who have no legal status or funding to achieve full independence. The key aims are that the young people can achieve their own goals as soon as they are ready to, this may be securing their own accommodation, returning to education, securing an apprenticeship or returning to live with family. This funding will partly cover rent of a suitable property, maintenance of the building, IT, and support worker costs.

31. South London Refugee Association, Croydon, Lambeth, Merton, Southwark and Wandsworth

This funding will support caseworkers who provide holistic, specialist support to care-experienced young migrants who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. They will work to resolve outstanding immigration or asylum issues and enable young people to access appropriate accommodation, essential services, as well as training and employment opportunities.

32. Stonewall Housing, London wide

The funding will support a specialist caseworker  to run a project which will offer advice and advocacy tailored to the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth in London. This includes assistance in navigating housing options, accessing emergency and supported accommodation, and securing move-on housing.

33. Switchback, London wide

Switchback supports young prison leavers. This grant will support the charity to help young people navigate post-release challenges, and provide practical support (Trainee expenses) through weekly Tesco vouchers, Oyster card top-ups, and phone credit. This is crucial to ensure young people can attend Switchback meetings, travel to training shifts, and get to probation or housing appointments, as well as buy toiletries and food until their benefits start or they find a sustainable job.

34. The Outside Project, London wide 

This funding be used to make direct payments to young people aged 18-25, enabling them to pay housing deposits and six weeks’ rent, cover transport costs of moving and initial bills. This will also support an addition of a youth specific drop-in space and worker at their LGBTIQ+ Centre to help maintain tenancies.

35. The Spires Centre, Croydon, Lambeth, Wandsworth

The Spires Centre supports those who are rough sleeping to exit homelessness as well as helping to prevent homelessness for those who are disadvantaged and at risk of becoming homeless. This funding will allow their project to continue in providing targeted support to under 25s across South London in partnership with other specialists.

36. Well Kneaded, Wandsworth

This grant will fund Nourish, a 12 month training programme providing training to young people in London facing barriers to employment. The programme gives them both skills and confidence, and is delivered in two phases. The first phase is 12 weeks long and focusses on technical training in hospitality skills. The second phase (employment and progression support) is 9 months long. In this phase they work with a trainee graduate to help them secure and sustain employment.

37. YMCA Trinity Group, Cambridge

YMCA Trinity Group focus on supporting and empowering young people, strengthening families, and supporting communities to thrive. The funding will be split between 2 youth projects in Cambridgeshire: Queen Anne House, a 79-bed house, and Time Stop in Peterborough, a 22-bed hostel.

38. Young People and Children First / Bridge for Young People, Berkshire

Young People and Children First, known as Bridge for Young People, provides a home and support to young people (aged 16-25) who are leaving care or who are homeless. They provide them with a stable home, emotional support and practical help during this crucial time as they move into independence. These funds will be spent on set up costs for their new project: physical goods for bedrooms, security for property and professional fees for licenses, alongside support towards the first few month’s utility bills including council tax.

39. Young People Cornwall, Cornwall

Young People Cornwall support young people to access benefits and provide informal education around budgeting, living skills, cooking. This funding will contribute to hiring 2 workers, food during the sessions and food vouchers for young people.

40. Your Place, Newham

Your Place is a charity building hope and enabling lasting change to end homelessness for people in east London. This funding will support residents experiencing homelessness and help them into independent accommodation and employment.

41. Youth & Community Connexions, Enfield

This grants will support in the expansion of the positive pathway program to enable the charity to deploy more professional mentors and mediators to support young people on the verge of being excluded from home. The main goal is to mediate and resolve conflicts within families to prevent youth homelessness.

42. Youth League UK, Barking and Dagenham

Youth League UK aims to support NEETs primarily from Black African backgrounds, aged 16-25 at-risk of homelessness. This funding will provide a safe space with activities and youth friendly, gender, and culturally sensitive support into employment, education and training.

43. Youth Legal, London wide

Youth Legal facilitates young people’s access to justice through high quality young person-friendly legal advice, support and education. This funding will support in continuing to run a free specialist legal advice service for young people to assist people through homelessness and gatekeeping. The charity will provide telephone, webchat, email and face-to-face advice from their office during weekdays.
