Meet the Team: Maddy Malliwal

As part of our Meet the Team series, we’re shining a light on the people behind LandAid’s mission to end youth homelessness.

This month, we spoke to Maddy Malliwal. As LandAid’s Executive Assistant and Team administrator, Maddy is essential in supporting the delivery of our strategy, and ensuring LandAid is a great place to work!

What brought you to LandAid in the first place?

I started my career in law and was a real estate partner in a national law firm. In 2021 I decided to take a career break and spend some more time at home with my two young children.

I then started working part time as a teaching assistant in a local secondary school supporting children with special educational needs. Whilst I enjoyed this role I felt that I wanted to find something that would make more use of my skills and experiences as a real estate lawyer.

When my role came up at LandAid I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for me to utilise my skills whilst doing something to help others and tackle an issue which I feel passionate about.

What’s your role, how do you help end youth homelessness?

As executive assistant and team administrator I support the CEO in delivering the strategy and aims of LandAid. I love the variety of my role and the opportunities I have to get involved in lots of different areas of the charity.

What’s one project or moment that made you proud to work at LandAid?

The Race for LandAid. It was the first event I was involved in as it was held not long after I started with the charity. I loved the buzz and energy of the event (despite the sweltering heat!) and the fact that I played a small part in making the event such a huge success was so rewarding.

The number of participants and the amount of money raised was testament to all those in the property industry that are passionate about trying to help those experiencing youth homelessness.

What’s one challenge LandAid faces in this work that you think more people should know about?

That all of the money we give to the front line charities who are working directly with those experiencing youth homelessness comes entirely from the donations and fundraising by our charity partners and supporters.

We receive no government support and as such are so reliant on the generosity of the property industry to be able to keep doing what we are doing.

The fact that the number of young people experiencing homelessness continues to grow, shows that, as a sector, we are simply not doing enough at the moment.

What’s one thing you wish more people in the property sector understood about our mission?

That homelessness is rarely a choice the young person has voluntarily made. The opportunities and environment a child experiences growing up can have such a huge impact on their future.

This needs to be addressed if we want to try and put an end to youth homelessness.

Meet the rest of the team!
