Spotlight: Amy Conlock, Director at Abierto talks all things LandAid Trek

With places for the 2025 LandAid Trek now live, we caught up with Amy Conlock, a participant in last year’s inaugural event, to hear about her experience. Amy shares what motivated her to sign up, the incredible feeling of supporting LandAid’s mission to end youth homelessness, and her reflections on an unforgettable weekend.

A long-standing supporter of LandAid, Amy is a Director at Abierto, a valued pro bono communications partner that provides ongoing support across our digital marketing channels. We’re incredibly grateful for Abierto’s contributions—and for the extra steps Amy has taken over the past year to go above and beyond in championing our cause.

What motivated you to take part in the LandAid Trek?

I’ve worked with LandAid as one of their comms partners for a few years and have always wanted to do something to get involved with the fundraising side of things. When the inaugural LandAid Trek came along, it was the perfect opportunity as I love hiking and thought it would be a great way to challenge myself.

How did you find the 2024 Trek – what was the most challenging and most rewarding part?

I loved it. The most challenging part was doing it on very little sleep – it was like one of those nights before an early flight where you’re counting down the hours and not getting any sleepier – and the most rewarding part was the crisp, cold pint in the beer garden at the end!

How did you prepare for the challenge? Do you have any training tips for this year's participants?

I’m quite active anyway, regularly walking the dog and running, but I threw in some extra training for the trek. I did a couple of local hikes (I’m lucky enough to have rolling hills on my doorstep) but also ended up driving to Wales and hiking Pen y Fan one weekend as one of my clients said he’d give a big donation if I included it. It was definitely good practice, and my client stuck to his word.

My tips are to get out in the hills if you can and make sure your walking boots are fully broken in!

How did it feel knowing that your efforts were helping to end youth homelessness?

It felt brilliant to know that we – a bunch of property professionals hiking in the hills in Wales – were making such a huge collective difference to the lives of young people facing homelessness. During the celebrations after the trek, we listened to one of LandAid’s beneficiaries talk about the impact the donations they receive have. To hear first-hand where the money we raise goes and the effect it has on real lives was so inspiring and humbling.

What would you say to someone thinking about signing up but unsure if they can do it?

You can do it! We all tackled the trek together – no one gets left behind – and the group is so supportive of one another. There’s no better morale boost.
