In April 2025, experienced climber Jay Whiting will embark on an extraordinary challenge only a handful a people have tried to date, scaling the formidable peaks of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse in a single season in support of LandAid.
This challenge, which he has named Project:3 and is known as the “Triple Crown” in the mountaineering world, is a gruelling test of endurance, resilience, and determination. If he succeeds, he will become the youngest Brit to have ever achieved the feat.
Jay is undertaking this extreme challenge to raise vital funds for LandAid, the property industry’s charity dedicated to ending youth homelessness in the UK. With homelessness among young people rising at an alarming rate, Jay’s mission is clear: to push his limits to inspire action and raise crucial funds to provide young people with a safe and secure place to call home.
“This is the toughest challenge I’ve ever faced,” said Jay. “But compared to what thousands of young people across the UK go through when they find themselves homeless, it’s nothing. For the past two years, Jay has dedicated himself to an intense six-day-a-week training regimen, preparing for the immense physical and mental demands of high-altitude mountaineering. The challenge will see him face some of the harshest conditions on Earth, battling extreme cold, unpredictable weather, and oxygen-starved altitudes above what is known as the “death zone”.
“For around 6 weeks I will be climbing these mountains and putting my body to its absolute limit. Most climbers will take 6-8 weeks to climb Everest alone so to climb all three in the same period of time is a huge challenge. To date, only one other British climber has climbed the “Triple Crown” which is testament to the degree of difficulty that it entails.”
LandAid works to bring the property industry together to provide life-changing support for young people facing homelessness. Last year alone, more than 118,000 young people aged 16-25 in the UK faced homelessness—a staggering 10% increase from the previous year. The crisis continues to worsen due to rising housing costs, financial instability, and a severe lack of affordable accommodation. Through funding essential housing projects and support services, LandAid helps young people rebuild their lives and secure a brighter future.
Jay’s challenge is nothing short of extraordinary. Taking on Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse in a single season is a feat that demands immense strength, resilience, and courage—qualities that reflect the determination we need to tackle youth homelessness in the UK. As the youngest Brit to ever attempt this, Jay is not just making history; he’s making a difference.
