What do they need help with?

YMCA Essex, part of the global YMCA movement, provides essential services to homeless young people in Chelmsford and Colchester. Their 44-room supported housing unit in Colchester has successfully helped young people aged 16-25 develop the life and social skills needed for independent living, achieving a 92% positive move-on rate. The charity’s mission is to provide temporary accommodation, advice, and support to help young people transition into permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

In a significant step towards expanding their impact, YMCA Essex is planning the development of 38 new self-contained studio apartments at their Chelmsford premises. This development, supported by Homes England, will provide vital housing for homeless young people. The pre-application planning stage has been completed, and YMCA Essex is preparing to submit their full planning application.

To bring this project to fruition, YMCA Essex is partnering with Y Housing Association to secure funding from Homes England. While YMCA Essex owns the land and building, Y Housing Association will act as the landlord for the residential units, and YMCA Essex will manage the remaining areas and provide tenant support for the new apartments.

To move forward with the development, YMCA Essex is seeking pro bono legal advice on structuring agreements with Y Housing Association and their funders. Specifically, they need assistance in defining roles, responsibilities, and expectations between YMCA Essex and Y Housing to ensure the successful delivery of the project and long-term sustainability.
