What do they need help with?

James’ Place is a charity that offers free, life-saving treatment to men experiencing suicidal crises across its centres in Liverpool, London, and Newcastle. Since 2018, the charity has treated over 3,100 men, offering quick, accessible, and effective treatment in a non-clinical, safe, and friendly environment. The therapy provided is proven to work and helps men resolve their crises to prevent suicide.

As demand for its services has increased, James’ Place’s Liverpool team has expanded significantly over the past 12 months. However, the current office space is no longer adequate for the growing team, and the charity is looking to develop an unused basement area within the building to accommodate this growth. The building is a 4-story Georgian property and is listed, which brings specific challenges for the design and development of the space.

James’ Place is seeking pro bono architectural support to design the basement area, which should include natural light, a co-working space, a break-out area, and at least one soundproof, confidential room (preferably two). The space should also include a downstairs toilet, if possible, and create a warm, welcoming environment that reflects the rest of the centre’s feel. Some challenges include limited natural lighting, dampness, cold temperatures, and the original stone flooring, all of which need to be taken into consideration in the design.

The charity hopes to find a solution that will provide a functional, comfortable, and appropriate space for its growing team while maintaining the integrity of the listed building.
