What do they need help with?

In response to the growing demand for its services, and with a typical waiting list of 30 to 40 individuals, the organisation is now planning to build four new flats on its site. Planning permission has already been granted to convert a former dance studio space into three flats, with permission for a fourth flat expected imminently.

Architects’ drawings have been completed, and both building and fire regulations have been consulted. Full plans and technical details are available upon request.

With an experienced in-house maintenance team, the organisation intends to undertake the majority of the build itself.

However, they are seeking partner organisations to donate materials and fixtures to help fit out the flats — including kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, flooring, and similar items. Some aspects of the project, such as plastering, fall outside the in-house team’s capabilities, and support in these areas would also be welcomed.

The organisation is also looking to engage a partner to support with quantity surveying and Building Regulations compliance.

Planning permission for the initial three flats is valid until February 2026, and the aim is to complete as much of the work as possible before that deadline to secure a Certificate of Lawfulness and avoid resubmitting a planning application.

Until now, financial constraints have prevented progress on the project. However, with support from Prince William through the Duke of Cornwall Foundation — including a kickstart donation — the organisation is now in a position to move forward.

The organisation is due to launch a campaign to raise additional funds and connect with partner organisations willing to contribute time, expertise, or resources to help bring this project to life.

About the organisation

YMCA Cornwall, based in Penzance, provides vital support for vulnerable young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness due to a range of complex circumstances. Many of these individuals have experienced family breakdown, violence, social exclusion, and rejection, with the resulting trauma often leading to ongoing challenges.

The organisation works towards the goal of enabling each young person to live independently and successfully. This begins with the provision of safe and secure accommodation, followed by the development of a tailored support plan designed to connect each young person with the support and opportunities available to them.

While YMCA Cornwall primarily supports young people within the county, it also receives referrals from local authorities across the UK seeking emergency placements for those at risk who need to be relocated for their safety and wellbeing.

According to Cornwall Council data, there are currently 170 supported accommodation spaces available for vulnerable young people in the region — 50 of which are provided by YMCA Cornwall.
