What do they need help with?

British Home is seeking pro bono feasibility and architectural support to explore the potential redevelopment or adaptation of part of its existing care and rehabilitation facility in South London. The building in question is a two storey dwelling, of 7 contained units. Further building information, surveys and existing plans can be made available as the project develops.

The charity is investigating whether this building could be converted into accessible accommodation and support provision for young adults aged 18–24 living with complex neuro-disabilities who are transitioning from paediatric into adult services. This is an area where British Home has identified a significant gap in provision, with many young people facing limited options for appropriate accommodation and specialist support.

The project is currently at an early exploratory stage. Initial internal discussions have highlighted a number of potential challenges within the existing building, including accessibility limitations, narrow rooms and corridors, lift constraints and wider structural or mechanical considerations.

British Home is therefore seeking high-level professional support to assess whether redevelopment or adaptation is realistically achievable. The charity would welcome expertise to help evaluate the building’s structural and spatial viability, its ability to meet modern accessibility standards, the likely scale of intervention required and any significant risks or constraints that could affect future development.

At this stage, the organisation is not seeking detailed design work. Instead, it is looking for early-stage multidisciplinary input that may include architectural advice, structural assessments, accessibility reviews and high-level viability guidance to determine whether the project should progress to a future design and fundraising phase.

About the organisation

British Home is a London-based charity that has been supporting people living with complex neuro-disabilities since 1846. The organisation provides specialist nursing care, neurorehabilitation, residential care, respite support and therapy-led services for adults affected by acquired brain injury, spinal injury, stroke and progressive neurological conditions.

Working closely with NHS and rehabilitation pathways, British Home supports people with highly complex physical and neurological needs to maximise independence, wellbeing and quality of life. The charity provides personalised care and rehabilitation programmes designed to support both short-term recovery and longer-term living arrangements.

Through this proposed project, British Home hopes to explore new opportunities to support young adults transitioning into adult services, helping to create more stable, accessible and person-centred pathways for those with significant care and accommodation needs.
