In May 2023, we lost Kevin Hunter (then our Head of Programmes and Impact) following a short battle with cancer. With the support of his family, we have since launched a fund to further his work and passion for supporting young people in need: The Kev Hunter Memorial Fund.

Doorstep is the first charity to be awarded a grant through the memorial fund. The charity will use this award to deliver a much needed capital project in Grimsby for young neurodivergent people who may be experiencing or be at risk of homelessness. Over the next 2 years, the charity aims to build 4 new high quality and sustainable one bed flats that are cost effective and affordable to rent.

The flats will be developed in the East March area of Grimsby on land owned by Doorstep (an unused car park) using modular construction methods, demonstrating how modern methods of construction can unlock brownfield sites which are not typically possible using traditional construction methods. The one bedroom flats will provide much needed housing for young people who are ready to move on to education, employment and training but are marginalised by the local housing market and who still need some support during this transition period, particularly those with neurodiversity.

The prototype project will lead, in Year 2, to the development of a modular construction factory in Grimsby offering training, apprenticeship and employment opportunities for young people. Young people will also lea
