Influencing change to end youth homelessness

At LandAid, we’re committed to ending youth homelessness – and we know we can’t do that without influencing the systems, structures and decisions that shape young people’s lives.

As the UK property industry charity, we’re uniquely placed to bring together business leaders, policymakers, and frontline organisations. We use our voice to highlight what’s working, challenge what isn’t, and create the conditions for lasting change.

What we focus on

Our influencing work is guided by three key priorities:

  • Homes – championing access to safe, warm, and affordable accommodation for young people.

  • Skills – supporting young people to gain the training and experience they need to thrive.

  • Place – enabling local, joined-up responses to homelessness that reflect the needs of young people and the strengths of communities.

These themes sit at the heart of our mission to be a trusted advisor on youth homelessness, backed by the insight and expertise of our partners across the property sector.

How we work

We focus our energy where we can have the greatest impact – amplifying youth voices, convening cross-sector partners, and using data and evidence to inform better policy and practice.

Our approach is:

  • Collaborative – we work with others, not in isolation.

  • Constructive – we advocate, not agitate.

  • Credible – we share insight drawn from real-world partnerships, frontline experience, and industry expertise.

We’re politically neutral and always centre the needs of young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

What we’ve done so far

What we’ve done so far

We’re still early in our influencing journey – but we’ve already taken key steps towards building our voice and impact:

  • Co-founded the Youth Chapter Coalition – a growing alliance calling for stronger action on youth homelessness.

  • Contributed to government strategy – including input to Task and Finish Groups as part of the Government’s work to develop its national homelessness strategy.

  • Convened the UK Homelessness Data Forum – a cross-sector space for sharing insight and improving data quality, with participation from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

  • Joined A Way Home Scotland – a coalition advocating for coordinated, youth-focused responses to homelessness across Scotland.

  • Engaged party conference events and manifestos – including influencing activity ahead of the 2024 general election and representation in Scottish Labour’s housing policy briefings.

What’s next

Our influencing strategy will continue to grow, and so will this page. We’re developing new ways to:

  • Share learning from our grant programmes and industry partnerships.

  • Support our corporate partners to speak out on behalf of young people.

  • Work with key networks and government bodies to create change at scale.

We believe that ending youth homelessness is possible – but only if we work together to shape the policies, systems and places that young people rely on.

Youth homelessness: The urgent need

Last year, 118,000 young people in the UK approached their local council for housing support. But what does that really mean? Homelessness is more than just sleeping on the streets. While this can be the most dangerous, and most visible, form of homelessness, it is just the tip of the iceberg.
