About the Organisation

Whitley Bay Young People’s centre operates in the Hillheads Estate on the edge of Whitley Bay, an area currently ranked at 40% on the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). While not the poorest, it falls below average, standing in contrast to the generally affluent surroundings of Whitley Bay.

The charity offers, and hosts third-party providers to deliver, a variety of youth and community services. The organisation also hosts one-off events such as film and games nights to engage the local community.

Post-COVID recovery has been a significant challenge, with efforts led by a relatively new board of trustees and a part-time Youth Worker. While the charity has received valuable funding support, a substantial funding gap is approaching. The current Chair is actively reviewing all costs, including a concerningly high insurance policy renewal, to address financial pressures.

The charity’s core mission, as outlined in its first charitable object, is “to support and informally educate young people in the Whitley Bay area of North Tyneside through their leisure-time activities so as to develop their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual capacities, enabling them to grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society, and to improve their conditions of life.”

The charity leases its building from the local Rugby Club on a long-term lease and is focused on sustaining and expanding its services, particularly youth programs, to serve both the Hillheads Estate and Whitley Bay as a whole.

The charity’s building insurance is up for renewal on 1st April, and the annual cost is significantly high. The Charity is therefore requesting pro bono support in engaging a surveyor to confirm the rebuild cost of the building, as this figure directly impacts the insurance premium.

The building spans approximately 600 square meters, is single-storey, and was constructed in 1962. Internally, it includes three main rooms, a kitchen area, a study, and a few smaller spaces. The charity’s postcode is provided, and for locals, the building is situated at the very end of the small lane running alongside the Ice Rink.
