About the Organisation

www.ymcaessex.org.uk

YMCA Essex provides services to homeless young people.  The organisation is part of the global YMCA movement but is a local charity based in Chelmsford, Essex.  YMCA Essex has a 44-room supported housing unit in Colchester. The aim is to provide temporary accommodation and advice for individuals aged between 16 and 25, in order that they may develop the necessary life and social skills to live independently.

Residents will be required to meet regularly with their Housing Officer and complete support plans & any other associated actions, which detail how they intend to achieve the skills needed for full independence. Residents must be in, or actively committed to securing education, employment, training or volunteering whilst living at YMCA Essex supported accommodation.

Our homeless young people accommodation services in Colchester have achieved 92% positive move on’s for young people, where they have successfully moved onto their own independent accommodation.

The length of time a resident stay in YMCA Essex supported accommodation will depend on their personal need, but their Licence is for a maximum of two years, before being supported to move into alternative and hopefully more permanent accommodation.

The charity plans to develop 38 new self-contained studio apartments at its existing premises in Chelmsford, with support from Homes England, to provide housing for homeless young people.

They have successfully completed the pre-application planning stage and are now preparing to apply for full planning approval. To bring this project to life, the YMCA is partnering with Y Housing Association to secure funding from Homes England. While YMCA Essex currently owns the land and building, Y Housing will become the landlord for the residential units, while YMCA Essex will oversee the management of all other areas, as well as providing tenant support for the new studio apartments.

To move forward, they would greatly benefit from pro bono legal advice on structuring agreements with their partners and funders. Specifically on defining the roles, responsibilities, and expectations between Y Housing Association and YMCA Essex.
